Don't worry if someone spills something. It's inevitable that when you have lots of people over for a meal - especially during the Holidays- things are going to be spilled on the Furniture, or carpet. Don't panic.
For gravy spills, big food spills, red wine, soda, coffee or tea, sprinkle a heavy layer of salt right on the stained item. Your calm demeanor will put the person who had the accident at ease and the salt will keep the cloth from staining until you can get to it later.
Room Arranging
What to avoid
Don't arrange furniture too far away from a focal point, particularly a TV or fireplace. Nor should you put all the furniture against a wall or on one side of a room.
The top image illustrates a classic example of what your room should NOT look like.
What you should do instead is cluster furniture around a focal point, such as a fireplace, entertainment center, or bay window. To create the most appealing look, and to invite conversation, make sure the seating areas are placed within 10 feet of each other. At the same time make sure there is ample clearance between the pieces for free movement, and do not block walkways, or entrances. Place furniture so people can easily see the television, or the main focal point, but avoid putting furniture directly in front of it, or blocking the view, or the focal point. Consider the use of ottomans which can be strategically placed around the room, in an attractive manner, but easily moved to any place additional seating may be desired. The 2nd illustration is a good example of what a well thought out room looks like.
